IS LUXURY AND LEGACY THE NEW FACE OF INCENTIVE TRAVEL?

No longer seen as perks or jollies, incentive events are a powerful way to reward and retain, inspire and energise whilst reflecting the values of those attending. And far from limiting the experience, sustainable principles can make it even more memorable and aligned with what matters most.

Millennials and Gen Z care deeply about the planet and the people behind the brands they support. For them, luxury is less about status symbols or exclusivity – and more about experiences, positive impact and conscious living. So, when it comes to events, it’s no surprise they want more than great food and a nice view. They want experiences that deliver on impact, engagement and authenticity. That feel good and do good.

Fortunately, there are countless ways to reward and inspire attendees while reflecting their values, including:

  • Wildlife conservation on safari
  • Farm-to-table cooking classes with local chefs
  • Hiking, biking or kayaking in UNESCO-listed sites
  • Beach clean-ups followed by shared community meal
  • Craft workshops or local skill-sharing
  • Purposeful gifting locally made products that support community enterprise.
We particularly love TOGETHERBAND. Handmade from recycled plastic ocean waste and decommissioned firearm metal, each band supports a UN Sustainable Development Goal and comes as a pair: one to keep, one to give. Plant-based S’wheat custom-branded bottles also make a super-stylish keepsake.

The key lies in considered, intentional design. From menus to materials, travel to takeaways, every touchpoint – however small – is part of a wider sustainability story.  Circular design principles help eliminate waste. Local, seasonal menus can support both the guest experience and your brand’s environmental goals. Immersive storytelling and emotional engagement mean attendees walk away feeling connected, energised and valued.

The move toward ‘slow tourism’ doesn’t mean banning flights. It means creating space to savour, immerse and connect. When you lean into the local – working with community partners, championing regional suppliers and tapping into real culture – that experience becomes so much richer and more memorable.

FIVE PRACTICAL STEPS TO IMPACT WITH INTEGRITY

Whether you’re an event planner or a brand decision-maker shaping your next brief, these five steps can help you deliver both strategic impact and ESG integrity:

1. REFRAME WHAT ‘REWARD’ LOOKS LIKE
Instead of: Flashy, status-led experiences (yacht parties or helicopter tours)
Consider: Curated unique, standout moments that deliver emotional resonance and local connection.
In action: Host a turtle conservation session at an eco-resort in the Maldives. Swap the gala dinner for a farm-to-table dinner or a solar-lit rooftop celebration.

2. THINK BEYOND THE ITINERARY
Instead of: Focusing solely on on-site event delivery.
Consider: Designing with long-term outcomes in mind – start with your ‘why’ and work backwards.
In action: Align internal launch comms with on-the-ground engagement and post-event storytelling. Include a purpose-led masterclass or volunteering element attendees can reflect on and share.

3. BUILD PURPOSE INTO EVERY LAYER
Instead of: Sustainability as a bolt-on
Consider: Integrating ESG values into your event architecture, from supply chain and partner selection to menu choices and merchandise. (Tokenism is easy to spot – and harder to forget!)
In action: Choose a venue like The Langham in London (EarthCheck Platinum) or The Chedi in Montenegro (Green Key, Zero Waste). Use B-Corp partners to source locally crafted gifting.

4. SOURCE WITH INTEGRITY
Instead of: Prioritising convenience or lowest cost.
Consider: Vetting local suppliers for ethics, pay and purpose alignment
In action: Work with venues and partners who share your values, such as re-wrap (India) for high-quality, handcrafted textiles or ethical gifting through Project Merchandise.

5. SHOW TRANSPARENCY
Instead of: Hiding behind ‘perfect’
Consider: Being honest about your process and progress – attendees (and stakeholders) value transparency
In action: Share your sustainability scorecard in event comms. Talk about your venue choices, travel policies or decisions like switching to local.

The best results happen when clients and agencies co-create the experience. From travel policies to speaker selection, from better venues to budget flexibility – success lies in collaboration. In practice, that means:

  • Re-thinking group flights and local transfers. The move toward ‘slow tourism’ doesn’t mean slow travel. Travel in economy instead of business to reduce carbon emissions or take direct flights from airlines that promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
  • Choosing venues with verified sustainability credentials
  • Designing low-impact, high-engagement itineraries that still deliver connection, celebration and reward
  • Offering purpose-driven participation (volunteering, legacy projects or carbon-positive activities)

MAKING BETTER CHOICES, NOT BORING ONES!
Sustainable doesn’t mean joyless. It means thoughtful, intentional – with plenty of ‘wow’!
We believe luxury and legacy can go hand in hand and we’re here to help clients get that balance right, creating unforgettable moments that feel good and do good. Because great events shouldn’t come at the cost of people or planet.
